About

A map of Marseille,
free and made with love.

Discover Marseille is an open, interactive map of the 111 official neighbourhoods of the Phocaean city. No ads. No trackers. No paywall. Just open data, beautifully presented.

The project in a nutshell

From Le Panier to the Calanques, from the Old Port to L'Estaque, Marseille is made of 110 administrative neighbourhoods that few locals even know by heart. This site maps each one with:

  • Official polygons from the French open-data portal
  • A warm description in four languages (history, atmosphere, must-see places, anecdote)
  • 14 categories of points of interest (metro, tram, buses, schools, parks, beaches, markets, museums, restaurants…) — clickable and geolocated
  • A photo gallery from Wikimedia Commons with full credit and license attribution
  • The cultural agenda synced every night from OpenAgenda — concerts, exhibitions, performances, workshops, per neighbourhood
  • A personal account to bookmark your favourite neighbourhoods and soon receive a weekly digest of upcoming events
  • Four languages: French, English, Spanish, Italian

Where does the data come from?

Everything is sourced from open, free datasets. No scraping of private sites. Each dataset is credited and used in line with its license.

Who I am

Hi, I'm Aurélien VIALET.

CTO at a tech company by day, where I spend my time on innovation, AI projects, technical infrastructure management and project leadership. By night and on weekends I build side-projects that blend my three favourite things: open data, mapping, and interfaces that are a pleasure to look at.

Discover Marseille came from a simple observation: Marseille tells its story better when you know its 111 neighbourhoods. But sources are scattered, official tourism is heavy, and municipal open data is underused. So I built this small, free, living atlas for tourists, locals, and the merely curious.

Happy to chat about the tech behind it (Vite + TypeScript + Fastify + Postgres + BullMQ + Mistral, all Docker), about Marseille, or just to say hi.
